The DISC test is a popular behavioural assessment tool that measures four distinct personality traits: Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). These traits reflect how individuals behave in various situations, particularly in the workplace or social environments.

In Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson, these four DISC personality types are represented by colours: Red (Dominance), Yellow (Influence), Green (Steadiness), and Blue (Conscientiousness). The book expands on the DISC model by explaining how understanding these colours can improve communication, reduce misunderstandings, and enhance relationships, both in personal and professional settings.

The colours in the book correspond to the DISC types as follows:

  • Red = Dominance (D): Goal-oriented, assertive, and direct.
  • Yellow = Influence (I): Outgoing, enthusiastic, and social.
  • Green = Steadiness (S): Calm, patient, and supportive.
  • Blue = Conscientiousness (C): Analytical, precise, and methodical.

In essence, the DISC test categorizes individuals based on these four personality traits, and Surrounded by Idiots uses these types to simplify the understanding of human behaviour, making it easier to recognize and adapt to different personality types in various situations.
